University of Ghana suspends 4 former executives of Commonwealth Hall for defaming VC, others

Four former residents of Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana, who served as executives of the Junior Common Room(JCR) have been suspended from the University for a period years each for violating rules and regulations of the University.

Management, in a statement on the suspension, explained that the affected students in August 2022 organized or allowed the organization of several meetings at the JCR of Commonwealth Hall, thus providing a basis for the authoring and publication of false, reckless and defamatory statements against some senior officers – Vice Chancellor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) – and against the University itself.

The statement noted that the punishment meted out is consequent to “a complaint lodged against the affected students,” and that “the Disciplinary Board for Junior Members conducted a hearing and established a case of misconduct contrary to the University of Ghana Statutes 2011 (as amended) and the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017, against the former JCR Executives of the Commonwealth Hall.”

The suspended students are Paul Anim Inkoom (President), Bright Gati (Vice President), Daniel Kofi Boakye (Secretary) and Daniel Odoi Nyarko (Treasurer) who served as executive in 2022.

In August 2022, the University of Ghana Council upon investigations into clashes between Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall, sanctioned the Senior Hall Tutor and the Hall Master of Commonwealth Hall. This did not go down well with the JCR executives who organized meetings and registered their displeasure publicly. H
They accused the management of bias and demanded that the Vice Chancellor be called to order.

“The decision to relieve our Hall Master and Senior Tutor of their duties by the University Council could only be based on nothing but palpable falsehood fed it by the enemies of our Hall, who have demonstrated time without number, their abhorrence to the peaceful and disciplined nature of our Vandal fraternity,” the President of JCR said in an address on the issue.

“Once again, they have showcased their weakness by misleading UG Council, which is made up of highly respected men and women in society, who are led by no less a person but the revered retired Chief Justice of our country,” they had said in part.
