Dolce & Gabbana Launches New Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Scholars – ThatCelebrity.Com

Clothing has long been both restrictive and empowering for individuals who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. It has confined people within societal expectations and allowed them to express their individuality freely. In recent years, Dolce & Gabbana and others in the fashion industry have worked to bring more LGBTQ+ voices to the forefront of the industry, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, because representation matters when it comes to paving the way for the fashion industry’s future.

Dolce & Gabbana Launches a New Scholarship

Although there have long been LGBTQ+ individuals in the fashion industry, it is only more recently that their inclusion in both leadership and on the runway has been purposeful. Fashion has recognized the financial benefit of producing clothing and styles pioneered by the LGBTQ+ community without supporting it. Now, Dolce & Gabbana seeks to change that narrative. In October 2022, on International Coming Out Day, the fashion house announced they would sponsor a 4-year scholarship for an LGBTQ+ student pursuing fashion or a related field. By directing its financial support this way, Dolce & Gabbana demonstrates that it values diverse individuals’ education, training, and leadership.

Younger Generations Want Representation in Fashion

Younger generations, like Gen Z and Millenials, are increasingly paying attention to where their clothing comes from. They want to see themselves reflected in their clothing choices, not just their style. These generations want to see themselves in the owners and designers of brands, in the faces of the models who advertise the lines, and in the mission statements and financial decisions of these companies. Many people believe that actions are more important than words. It is more important to people in these generations to see companies participating in activism through financial support and advocacy than just in the designs of the clothing they sell. LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies believe that the fashion industry has the potential to impact significant societal change for this community, and they will put their money into brands that genuinely support their values.

LGBTQ+ and the Future of Fashion

Part of getting more representation into the top levels of fashion houses and on the significant catwalks means making education more accessible. Young people who come out to their families still run the risk of being cast out, which in addition to emotional damages, means that they may not be able to pay for college anymore. Dolce & Gabbana wants to support aspiring fashion designers and leaders who wouldn’t otherwise be able to receive an education through their scholarship via the Point Foundation. The Point Foundation has been supporting the educational dreams of LGBTQ+ students since 2002 at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. They aim to provide 552 scholarships for the 2022-2023 school year.
