The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has described government’s community mining program as a legitimate illegal mining practice which needs to be stopped immediately.
“When you talk about community mining, then you are talking about legitimate illegal mining. There is no difference between that and galamsey”. Secretary of State of Akyem Abuakwa Daniel Ofori Atta has said.
According to the State Secretary, Okeyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin is totally against the so-called community mining from the beginning.
“Our position is that community mining in itself is destructive, and there is no difference between community mining and ‘galamsey’ which is destroying our water bodies. Because community mining is more destructive… you are talking about a legitimate illegal mining which Osageyfo Amoatia Ofori Panin has expressed his view against and has said we want to stop the destruction of our rivers and lands. In the first place, we must stop that community mining”. Secretary of Akyem Abuakwa Mr Daniel Ofori Atta said this in an interview with Sompa FM in Kumasi monitored by MyNewsGH.com.
According to him, if the government insists it will continue to carry out the so-called community mining program, the Akyem Abuakwa traditional Council is not prepared to be part of it and that remains the problem of government.
“If community mining exists, that is the problem of the government because all minerals in the land belongs to the government. So the government has the power to inaugurate community mining scheme in every part of the country”, he said adding that, nobody has informed Okyehene about the inauguration, commencement and release of lands to people of Asamang Tamfoe for mining.
